West Boggs, From a Winning Point of View
Our west Boggs tournament started out being impressed on how everyone was launching their boats in such a fast and orderly fashion. Our day started out slow with us throwing fast baits and as we watched other boats fishing slow and relying on our research we decided to slow down and fish the way we like to fish and the fish started to come about 1 keeper an hour. I know my partner John Harris was cold at first but he hung in there like a champ, I was proud of him for his first tournament win in just his second season of tournament fishing with this being his first IBC tourney. Our hats off to Josh Ray for that 7.86 hog and for the rest of the club bringing in a slide show of hogs which make our win even more special. A big thanks to THE DEADFISH CO. for putting up a big fish prize pack and I did have my DEADFISH shirt on under all the winter weather clothing so I was sporting DEADFISH. I cant wait for IBC night at JOCKAMO'S PIZZA. All in all the tournament was ran like a class act, We have one heck of a club. See ya on the water.

April 2nd USA Bassin Tournament 6.12lb Largemouth

Josh Ray and Mike Botos West Boggs 7.86lb Trophy

There were several lessons to be learned Saturday March 26th 2011. #1 When it's 30 degrees and the wind is 15 to 25 mph out of the N-NE you better dress warm because that's cold fishing conditions. #2 When the fish are in pre-spawn / spawn at West Boggs they don't care what the weather is doing, they have spawing to do and they are active. #3 Prefishing, preparation, a good plan and flawless execution of that plan pay off with catching the big fish of the day and finishing 3rd.

Brett languell and John Harris took 1st Place with a five fish limit weighing in at 19.44lb. Jeremy Crossley and Phil Mobley took 3rd with 3 fish at 17.99lb, Bob Speers and Boyd Patterson took 4th place with 2 fish weighing 12.52lb, Rounding out the top 5 was the team of Rick Ray and Tom Nelis with 3 fish weighing 11.75lb. These were not the only teams to turn in big fish, 17 of 19 teams weighed in 35 bass with a total weight of 142.26 lb for an average of 4.06lb per fish. All fish caught were safely returned to the lake after the tournamet. CPR, Catch Photo and Release is how these fish will be remembered. Indy Bass Club Beats Bad Weather at Lake Waveland

There is a pattern developing with the 2011 schedule that includes bad weather conditions. The weather has been a huge challenge for all the club members with alot of rain, wind and cold temperatures and more wind. Despite the weather conditions anglers dressed to stay as warm and dry as possible and went fishing. We started the day with two of our club officers being stuck in the mud next to the cabins they stayed in, a huge thank you to Byron Johnson for pulling them out. Next issue was an un-authorized catfishing tournament. Lake Waveland now has a fishing tournament permitting program designed to reduce congestion on the lake so that the lake is a safe place for all the people using the lake and to manage the pressure on the fishery so that the fishing remains as strong as it is now for many years to come. After some conversation with the other organization they decided to leave and possibly reschedule their event. Everyone did a great job despite the challenges and I would like to say "Thank You" to our members for their patience getting started. The #1 launch position was auctioned off and Team Jason outbid all other bidders and headed to their hot spot after the starter boat of Team Bilyeu began to call out the launch order. After a brutal day on the lake we finally got to the weigh-in at 3:30pm. The weigh-in was conducted inside the fish cleaning station to protect the scale and officers from high wind and rain. 11 of 22 teams brought 5 fish limits to the scales and a total of 84 fish weighing 210 pounds tipped the scales. A few biggies nearly topped the 5 pound mark including a 4.97 from Jeremy Crossley and Phil Mobley, a 4.71 from Brett Languell and John Harris and a 4.62 from Rick Ray and Tom Nellis. First place went to Brian Neal and Shawna Smith with 15.47lb, Jeremy Crossley and Phil Mobley with 14.8lb took second place while Jason Smith and Brian Hollis took third place with 13.8lb. An incredible $927 in sponsor awards were given away including gift certificates from Honey Creek Tackle, TGI Fridays, Outdoorsman Sport Shop, Burd Ford, Outback Steakhouse, Jockamo Pizza, Dennys Marina, Teddy's Burger Joint, and an awesome assortment of tackle from Red Shad. Phil Mobley also won the Deadfish Company "Big Fish" award that includes a Hat, Decal and two crankbaits.

Indy Bass Club Members Conduct a Bass Fishing Clinic

On April 29, 2011 a few members of the Indy Bass Club conducted a Bass Fishing Clinic at St. Joan of Arc School. Mr. Demma's 3rd,4th,5th and 8th grade gym classes had a little change from their regular gym class format, they got to go outside and learn about the sport of bass fishing. Mr. Demma, the Gym Teacher from St. Joan of Arc School and Brett Languell from the Indy Bass Club came up with the idea of a bass fishing clinic and asked the Indy Bass Club for some help with planning and conducting the clinic. All of the students senses were engaged as they got to see a live Largemouth Bass, soft plastic baits, hard baits, boat safety equipment and even practice some casting with the supervision of  the IBC members. The students seemed to have a wonderful time and as time passed and the word got out what was going on in the parking lot and a few teachers decided that their students needed a walk around the parking lot for a little excercise and maybe even see what was going on. Are you kidding, what school has ever had an Introduction to Bass Fishing Clinic in their parking lot, with boats, trucks, fishing poles and even a live Largemouth Bass for them to see? Well the students of St Joan of Arc School will be talking about that day for a long time. I would like to offer a huge "Thank You" to IBC members Michael Schwomeyer, Mike Botos, Brett Languell, and Jeff Pontius for their help in bringing this event to life and we are currently in the planning stages to reproduce the Bass Fishing Clinic at a couple of the IBC sponsors locations so that we can introduce the sport of Bass Fishing to more children and adults across the Indianapolis area. We want to include every member of the IBC in these Clinics, so watch the website and your email for more information about upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Michael Schwomeyer Wins Big Bass Rollover and Big Bass

Written By: Michael Schwomeyer

First, I would like to say Thank You to David Doran for offering me the rear deck and live well on his boat.  My boat encountered a mechanical issue while on the water Saturday.  My partner fishes a top 8 club and is chasing a top 8 finish.  Secondly, I would like to thank each club member who has given me any advise, tips, or suggestions. It has helped me out tremendously.

David and I started out by coming up with a plan that would suit us both since we would be competing against each other.  We are both just two years into bass fishing and sophomore members in IBC.  We still were able to incorporate some team work into the day by netting each other’s fish.  I think I had the most practice with his net as he was pulling them in most of the day.  We even joked at one point about him having more fish than me.  Towards the end of the day we had decided that we would try to fish a main lake point that is known to produce keeper fish.  When we arrived to that point, we noticed some other club members already fishing it and what we thought was another team waiting to fish it.  So, we moved on and fished the inside of the cove without landing any keepers.  With just an hour left in the tournament, the game plan changed to fish a bank and head back to the ramp.  David had caught a nice fish along the same stretch of bank on Saturday.  When we arrived to our first point to fish, my first cast out was to get a loop out of my reel. My second cast was closer to the bank.  I started to drag my bait to the weed line and then began to bounce it off the bottom a little like I had been doing most of the day.  I saw my line begin to swim away to my right and I said, “I got one!”  I set the hook so hard that I knocked slack in my line and about two seconds later I saw the biggest bass I had ever seen on the end of my line.  Before I could react and say anything David had the net ready.  Getting that beast to the boat was not an easy chore as I was shaking from disbelief and the rush of adrenaline.  When I finally landed the fish in the boat, I noticed I had a pretty good hook set and that I could put both my fists in its mouth it was so big. David got out his scales for a quick reading and that’s when I couldn’t believe what I had just done:  landed my first six pound bass.  I of course went “Ike” and let out a loud scream (It was heard across the lake by team GQ).  The secret to my catch was a Berkley Pit Boss (green pumpkin) Texas rigged.  As I celebrate my biggest catch ever and biggest ever to weigh in, I ask that each club member and team celebrate with me.  I have learned something from each of you and couldn’t have done it without all of you.  That’s why Indy Bass Club is the best, "It’s what we do"

Indy Bass Club / Bob Gates Pay It Forward Charity Open Team Tournament Results at Lake Waveland
Despite poor weather conditions in the week leading up to the tournament the skies dried up a bit and the wind laid down for the first time in what seemed like weeks to allow us to conduct a tournament, weigh-in, awards, raffles and food in comfort. 21 of 25 teams weighed in with a limit of 5 fish and total of 115 fish weighing in at 304.22 pounds. Thats an average weight of 2.63 pounds each. The #1 launch position was auctioned to raise money for the fundraiser and team IU with Jesse Schultz and Zach Wojtowicz matched all bids until they won the bidding war at $80. Our special guest emcee Jesse Schultz interviewed nearly all anglers as they weighed in and had their pictures taken. An awards ceremony was conducted at the shelter near the tennis courts where there was plenty of food and drink for everyone to enjoy after eight hours on the lake. Jesse awarded nearly $550 in gift certificates from all of the Indy Bass Club sponsors then announced the finishing positions of the top four teams and awarded them with their winnings. The Bob Gates crew ran the fundraiser part of the event and provided food, drinks and conducted a raffle with many awesome donated items. Kelley Romweber, President of Brooke's Place was present to enjoy all the activities and commented what a fun event it was and that all the participants seemed to be having such a good time. Kelley accepted checks to Brooke's Place totaling over $800.

Indy Bass Club Returns to Glen Flint

Glen Flint hasn’t been on the Indy Bass Club tournament schedule since May of 2009 when 17 teams took to the water to weigh in 7 keepers weighing 17.69lb. and the Big Bass weighing in at 4.06 lb.  There were 12 teams that blanked and no limits brought to the scales.

Fast forward to 2011 when 21 teams took on the Glen Flint (aka The Dead Sea) challenge and what a different lake it is in 2011. It’s possible Lake Waveland has been taking the pressure off while Glen Flint has done some healing as we saw 21 teams weigh in 43 fish with a total weight of 104.7 lb. Big Bass saw two fish go over the 5 lb mark including a 5.09 lb by Branham / Vickery and Big Bass and Big Bass Rollover honors went to Miller / Schwomeyer with a 5.41 lb lunker. Only two teams blanked and there were two teams with five fish limits. Team Jason / Jason took 1st place with 13.48 lb, 2nd place went to Team Crossley (P-Line) with 12.24 lb. 3rd place Branham / Vickery 10.56 lb.  4th place Miller / Schwomeyer 8.79 lb. and rounding out the top 5 Neal / Smith with 2 fish weighing in at 7.56 lb.
